To be fair, it’s easier to say than do. One of the best books I have in my armoury is one called ‘Don’t Make me Think‘. That’s essentially what we want when we go to a website. We just don’t want to think too much when we navigate around.

Sometimes clients want to try and be clever and put ‘about us’ and ‘contact’ us in obscure places or call them something different. But since websites started the about secion always came second on the menu and contact at the end.

We should never change this as it’s what we all know and understand. How annoying is it when supermarkets move stuff around all the time when you are used to going exactly where you know something is and suddenly its not there!

In WordPress is a great little plugin that we add to all our websites called ‘Call Now’ – it adds a floating button on the bottom right of the mobile screen that you just click and it goes straight through to your call facility.

Any design, let alone just web design, can be a daunting task – especially if you struggle with creativity. Typically our clients don’t know where to start. We all know what we like the look of and don’t like the look of but don’t really know how to get it for ourselves.

Design can sometimes be so subjective. The best place to start is to make a list of links to websites that you love and why and also websites that you don’t like so much and why.

Create a mood board of colours and icons and images that inspire you and that you feel represent the personality of your company.

There is a whole subject that I studied at University called ‘Semiotics’ and most people have never heard the word let alone know what it means.

Semiotics is the study of the use of symbolic communication. Semiotics can include signs, logos, gestures and other linguistic and nonlinguistic communication methods. As a word, semiotics derives from the Greek sēmeiōtikós, which describes the action of interpreting signs.
